Ride at Theme Park
Project Overview
Paramount Coatings was tasked with recreating a unique color application on stamped concrete that had originally been installed 20 years ago. The project involved restoring the water-themed aesthetic while ensuring the surface could withstand the high foot traffic of the popular water ride, Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barge, at Universal Orlando.
Objectives
The primary goal was to replicate the original design intent, which included revitalizing the stamped concrete with its watercolor effects between stamped wood plank patterns. The challenge was to maintain the integrity of the design while using modern materials capable of standing up to the harsh conditions of a busy theme park environment.
Challenges
Paramount Coatings faced several obstacles on this project:
Time Sensitivity: With strict deadlines imposed by the park's operations, the team had to work quickly to minimize ride downtime while ensuring a high-quality result.
Multiple Trades: The project site was a hive of activity, with various trades working in close proximity, making coordination critical.
Design Preservation: Paramount had to devise new techniques to maintain the original design’s look and feel.
Durability: The materials needed to withstand constant foot traffic, water exposure, and wear from thousands of visitors every day.
Innovative Solutions
Paramount Coatings developed a custom spray method to overlay integrally colored ParaRoll, creating a smooth color gradient that mirrored the original design. The team also formulated custom water-based stain colors to match the original color palette and ensure the restored area looked seamless with the existing surroundings.
Materials Utilized
Epoxy 100 Clear: Used as a primer to prepare the surface for further application.
ParaRoll with Custom Pigment: Applied to recreate the color gradient and ensure consistency with the original design.
ParaStain: Provided vibrant, water-resistant colors that enhanced the design's depth.
ParaSeal-19: A durable, protective top coat to safeguard the surface against water, foot traffic, and environmental wear.
Project Timeline
The project was completed over the course of six weeks. Despite the complex scheduling and site conditions, Paramount Coatings adhered to the timeline, ensuring minimal disruption to park operations.
Collaboration and Execution
Paramount Coatings collaborated closely with Roy Miller Painting, led by Project Manager Tony House. Tony’s team managed the on-site work, coordinating with other trades and ensuring a seamless workflow. This collaborative approach was critical in meeting the tight deadlines.
Results and Impact
The revitalized stamped concrete area now mirrors the original design with improved durability, bringing back the vibrant, thematic look of the ride. The project’s outcome was stunning, with the colors coming out perfectly to recreate the unique watercolor effect.
Client Feedback
Universal Studios provided highly positive feedback on the project, noting that the newly restored surfaces exceeded their expectations. The successful results led to additional scope being added to the project, underscoring their confidence in Paramount Coatings' expertise and ability to deliver under challenging conditions.
